Center for Colorado & the West

Founded in 2009 and situated in downtown Denver, the Center for Colorado & the West at Auraria Library (CC&W) advances understanding of Rocky Mountain history through “Preserving History; Creating Knowledge.” Signature projects enrich educational experiences for students enrolled at the University of Colorado Denver, Metropolitan State College of Denver, and the Community College of Denver on the Auraria Higher Education Center campus.

In the first year, students selected as Kenneth King Foundation Fellows and interns worked with faculty supervisors to build digital image collections, review historical book publications, produce digital video documentaries, write biographical profiles, and create Colorado resource guides. Project activities advance student learning experience, faculty curriculum development, and community outreach activities. Active partnerships with Denver Public Library and the History Colorado/Colorado Historical Society ensure coordinated efforts to further public history scholarship on Colorado and the West.

Now in its second year, CC&W is initiating a new book publication series to advance student learning. In keeping with the organization’s mission of preserving history and creating knowledge, students will work closely with experts in the field. Their research activities will deepen their knowledge of local history and their writing activities will catalyze their experience in professional publication. In this initial series publication, King intern Evelyn Waldron worked with local historian Barbara Sternberg to prepare a manuscript on Anne Evans. This community-campus collaboration has produced an original historical interpretation of an important cultural leader from Denver’s past. In addition, the project illustrates the promise of extending historical knowledge while enriching student learning.
